Elite Athletes Urge on Iranian Authorities to Prevent Death Sentence of Boxing Star

More than two dozen Olympic champions, trainers and additional international athletes have signed a letter urging a end to the death penalty of a champion boxer and coach, who is facing execution in the country.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

Amid increasing international outrage over Iran’s escalating use of the death penalty as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed letter denounces the Iranian regime's verdict to confirm the death sentence of the athlete.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has endured 60 months in detention, where he has been mistreated and confined in isolation.

“Competition is intended to promote faith, unity, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The capital punishment of a champion for his beliefs is a direct assault on these values and a caution to any competitor who dares to express dissent.

History of Executing Competitors

The appeal said that the boxer's circumstances was part of a pattern and underscored the country's past of sentencing to death athletes for their views, including Habib Khabiri, captain of the football side, and a volleyball captain, captain of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year Iranian wrestling champion, was also executed.

Further endorsers to the statement consist of Tracy Edwards, who skippered the inaugural female-only team in a global yacht race and was the first woman to earn a prestigious sailing award; the former captain of the Australian football team Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was detained in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and damage of public property”. His ruling has been annulled multiple times but on October 4 it was confirmed on the third attempt. His court case was condemned as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to prevent the boxer's death sentence is subsequent to a previous letter to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than 100 advocates and groups, urging intervention to stop the sports figure's capital punishment.

Execution Crisis

As per reports, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has achieved alarming levels”. In two thousand twenty-three, authorities put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. The year before, statistics showed 972 deaths, representing the highest number since 2015. More than hundreds of people have been executed so far in 2025.
