At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
